Imperialism

Imperialism is the backbone of Northern Africa. Many European countries came to Africa and controlled North Africa. Egypt and Sudan was controlled by the British and Libya was controlled by Italy. The French controlled a huge part of Northern Africa including Algeria, Tunisia, and some of Morocco, and the Spanish controlled Western Sahara and some of Morocco. They didn’t just come to Africa just because thought it would be fun, but instead they had a motive. The Industrial Revolution was becoming a major part of Europe. Then Europe had an economic depression and they thought Africa was a source of cheap raw materials. Not only did they go to Northern Africa because of a depression, but also they went because of gaining more power for their country and because of Christianity. They thought they had to help them out. That was the beginning of imperialism in Northern Africa.
When Europeans came to Africa it wasn’t all fun and games. It affected the Africans in a good and bad way greatly. When Europeans settled in Northern Africa, they claim ownership of Africa’s soil and made their own boundaries. Therefore, disturbing the boundaries made by the African ethnic groups. This caused a lot disagreement. If that wasn’t enough, they also made the Northern Africans’ work all day and get little or no pay. Even though they treated the Africans like this, they brought medicine and new technology to Africa improving the country. Also the nutrition, medicine, and new technology expanded the life span of the Africans.
They weren’t just affected during the imperialism even after the imperialism, they were in distress. Instead of helping out the countries as the Europeans were supposed to, they made them underdeveloped after they granted the Northern African countries their independence. They came and took most of their resources. The slave trade also decreased the population in Northern Africa and they didn’t have enough education from the European countries to make their own country. As mentioned previously in the paragraph before, the boundaries set by the Europeans still cause controversies after their independence.
In conclusion imperialism was a crucial part of shaping Africa and had many issues. Europeans came in for their own uses and didn’t treat them very well, but they brought medicine and technology. The Northern African countries wanted independence and finally achieve it but that didn’t mean they turned out fine. They weren’t ready to become a country because of what the European countries did before they became independent. They didn’t have enough education, resources, etc... Africa’s issues were greatly influenced by European imperialism.
